Their Eyes Were Watching God
Response #3, pp 140-184
Response type#6: Creative
“Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston is an unpredictable book. While reading this book, you will not notice that you are tired for more than six hours as the book is so interesting. In the ending of the book, romantic part cause you to feel that you want to have a lover, but cynical part cause you to be careful about personal relationship. However, you will definitely feel about the importance of love.
It is the story about Janie and Tea Cake. Even though Janie and Tea Cake regarded each other as real lovers, they received a conflict while hurricane occurred. Tea Cake was bit by crazy dog, which caused Tea Cake accepted a disease. Because of that, Tea Cake sometimes did not trust Janie perfectly and became crazy so that he tried to fire a pistol to Janie. One day, Janie fired the pistol to Tea Cake who was really crazy and tried to shot the pistol to Janie in order to prevent. Few months later, townspeople had gossiped about Janie, in her mind, Janie always missed the life with Tea Cake. The author’s expression in writing was pretty influenced so that I was able to accept how Janie felt during that event more and more.
The ending of this story might change to more exciting. If I have a chance to change the ending of the book, I like to change Tea Cake’s death to Janie’s. The reason is people might have a different reaction depend on sex. In the story, Janie missed Tea Cake for a long time, even whole life. However, what if Janie died, and Tea Cake is alive. I do not think Tea Cake keeps thinking of Janie and living alone like Janie did. As viewing the man’s usual act, Tea Cake will forget of Janie by one year, and then go out to find out new woman to live rest of the life. So, I hope to change the role of characters in the last.
Dear Ms, Zora
This book’s style of writing is unrespectable. In order to pick up this book, I searched what book eleven grades should read. So, I expected to join happily, and the review seemed exciting. However, my prediction was totally wrong because even I could not understand several conversations and I should read it too slowly as the language of conversation was formed by Black’s slang and speech style. You did not respect people who do not use English as natives. Your story was fine, but you should publish two kinds of books: original one and formal language one. So, everyone is able to enjoy reading. Please, think for non English natives before publish.

Response type#3: Connections to other “texts”
When I am done with second parts of the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God remind me of a Korean TV drama which is called Love War. This handles several kinds of illicit love based on real story. So, Love War broadcasts an example of illicit love every time, and then surveyed audiences whether it is possible to divorce in this case or not on end of the drama.
Their Eyes Were Watching God and Love War are not completely same, have some differences. The same element of both stories is main idea that handles illicit love between young and old one. For instance, book depicts love between Janie and Tea cake. At the middle of the part, Janie was lived with second husband who is named Jody. He was the leader of a town of blacks so that he required Janie to act like rich and high social statue woman as well as to stay in the store all the time. What Jody demanding to Janie was blocked Janie’s freedom. Even though Janie used to love Jody in the beginning of marriage, she was tired and hated of Jody’s acting. So, when Jody was dead by cancer, Janie was not sad as well happy to feel that she returned back her freedom. After 9 months, a stranger who is nicknamed Tea cake came to Janie’s store and talked and asked her to play checker. He was the first man who understands and plays what Janie wants. So, Janie suddenly fell in love with him, although townspeople gossiped about her changing mind rapidly. However, as they were happy by understand each other, Janie spent happier time than that of her first and second husband. In the drama, there was basically same thing there. A man was tired of a long marriage with his wife so that he found out fresh love with young woman.
The differences of both stories are position of people and ending of the love. One different is, in the book, a woman who is named Janie was richer and older than a man who is named Tea cake, but, in the drama, the position is opposite. The man was richer and much older than a woman. Another difference is the ending of love. In the middle of the book, as Janie’s second husband was dead, she did not have any problems to make a new husband except for her hometowns’ gossips. However, Janie and Janie’s her third husband, Tea cake, faced to the crisis which Tea cake is bit by crazy dog during hurricane occurred. Tea cake thought that Janie did something in order to kill Tea cake so that Tea cake tried to inject pistol to Janie. But, in order to prevent that, Janie killed Tea cake, which was the end of their relationship. On the other hand, in the drama, even though old man had a wife, he just found out the fresh love with young people. So, unquestionably, the ending was the old man was captured by his original wife, and then he had two choices whether he went back to his family, or he possessed his fresh love by divorce.
By reading Their Eyes Were Watching God, I thought of sad current world. To relate to with some part of the story, nowadays, love between old man and young woman is rapidly increased by money because young woman wants money, and old man wants to release his sexual feeling.

Response type#1: Reactions and Evaluation
“Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston is a story about Janie, the protagonist, a white – black woman who is raised by her grandmother, Nancy. Janie had married twice with a white, Logan, and a black guy, Jody by several reasons. Janie married Logan without love by grandmother’s hope. When Janie realized that she was not able to love him, she run off with black guy who dreamed to have authority in black people’s town. But, the marriage with black guy even was not fine. While reading the book, I could receive one love and hate.
What I love about “Their Eyes Were Watching God” was dynamic plot of story. When I started to the book, it seemed like the story is going to be about racial discrimination. The reason was, in the beginning of the book, the story introduced the background of Janie’s generation history. Janie’s grandmother, Nancy, was a black woman who was raped by her white master, and then gave a birth who was Janie’s mother. Janie’s mother also was raped by her school teacher so that she transferred Janie to Nancy and then run away. At the last generation which is Janie was also treated as a slave to white guy who is named Logan. The history showed the illness and racial difference of black folks. But, I could know that the main story of the “Their Eyes Were Watching God” was not racial discrimination as the story went to the relationship between blacks. Moreover, I am not sure what the main story is going to be about the end of the story as the issues changed in the beginning.
What I hate about “Their Eyes Were Watching God” was the conversations were consisted of black spoken language. As I read throughout the book, the more than half of the story was consisted of the conversations between the characters. As the characters were black, the author used black spoken language in the conversations. What I mean is “If dat mule is wuth somethin’ tuh you, Brother Mayor, he’s wuth mo’ tuh me. More special when Ah got uh job uh wok tuhmorrow.” (p 54) As I translated it, the sentence should be written like “If that mule is what something to you, Brother Mayor, he’s what more to me. More special when I got your job your wok tomorrow.” So, when I read the conversations, I should pronounce the sentences and slowed down the path of my reading. Moreover, sometime, I had no idea what the word represent to like “’Tain’t no earthly use.” (p51) I had no idea what ’Tain’t is. So, I had several difficulties to understand what the characters are saying.
I have read up to one third of the book. The story is rising to its climax. The reason is Jody kept restrict Janie in order to make her high authority black’s wife and acted something different with past such as slapping Janie’s face, which caused Janie to start to explode her accumulated temper. I predict that Janie will run off again with others in order to get better life and who understand Janie as a person.
